The BEST ‘Cheese’ Ever.

For our Valentines Day dinner, my boyfriend took me to this amazing vegan restaurant located at 1056 Bloor St.W in Toronto called The Hogtown Vegan. This place was by far the BEST vegan food I have EVER tasted.

The Hogtown Vegan serves  meat/dairy/egg free southern styled comfort food. They also do a weekend brunch and have a great selection of local beers on tap. The staff here are amazing, our server knew everything about the food and gave us amazing recommendations. We were hesitant on getting anything ‘cheesy’ because usually vegan cheese is not the best (aka: Daiya…) but she convinced us to try the Nachos that were loaded with their house made ‘cheese’, ‘sour cream’ , guac, beans and veggies. I used to LOVE cheese (seriously it was my go-to food) before I went vegan and until visiting this place I thought I would never get to taste cheese ever again. I was wrong. The Hogtown Vegan’s house made cheese is fucking amazing! I was literally licking my plate like a savage…

After tasting the nachos and cheese we decided to go full out and ordered the cheesiest things on the menu. I got the ‘Un-Chicken Caesar Wrap’ with Mac n’ Cheese on the side and my boyfriend got the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Poutine on the side. He usually is not very impressed by imitation meats that he has tried at most of the vegan restaurants we have been too since he is newly vegan and used to eat meat on everything. But he LOVED this meal! The ‘steak’ literally tasted like meat, I kid you not (it was kind of suspicious…). As for everything else, the mac and cheese was better than any mac and cheese I have every had (yes, even non-vegan kinds) and the caesar wrap was delicious.

The only downside to this place was that the poutine uses Daiya cheese shreds (which usually isn’t the best) BUT, their house made gravy (which is fucking unbelievably good) completely masks the taste of Daiya.

I highly recommend visiting this awesome place whether you are vegan or not! You will not be disappointed, I cannot wait to go back!

Cheese is the thing I miss most, I used to buy hunks of local cheese from the market and wander around eating it. I miss cheese most at Christmas! But I’d rather go cold turkey than eat synthetic cheese. I use nutritional yeast and make cashew ‘cheese’ but that’s as far as I go. Glad you had a great gastronomic experience though 😊

I only eat this ‘cheese’ stuff for special occasions, otherwise I have lost my craving for cheese. It was so hard at first tho.

I’m fine most of the time but when my husband makes homemade pizza it’s the smell of melted cheese that gets to me!
